“Connection is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.”
So says qualitative researcher Brené Brown. Perhaps you’ve seen her famous TED Talk “The power of vulnerability”? In it, Brown talks about human connection and its relationship to vulnerability and shame.
Interesting, but what does it have to do with business?

One of the biggest takeaways Brown found was that connection comes the willingness to let go of who you think you should be and simply be who you are.
This is an essential takeaway for business leaders and just about anyone who works with other people. The ability to be authentic and vulnerable — to let others see their true selves — is key to connecting with those you work with.
Brown says, “Vulnerability is the core of shame and fear and our struggle for worthiness, but it appears it’s also the birthplace of joy, creativity, belonging and love.”
In order to be fully embodied in your work, you have to embrace your own authenticity and vulnerability.
That doesn’t mean revealing all your character flaws to everyone in your office. You can certainly aim to be your best self — as long as you’re being yourself.
